ISO TS 16949 and IATF 16949 – Automotive

The ISO TS standard 16949 has been developed by the ISO committee and by IATF (International Automotive Task Force) to standardise and improve the quality of all ancillary automotive products and services globally.
The commitment of leading industry manufacturers towards the definition of specific management standards, integrable with those of the ISO 9000 family, has led to the creation of a single reference model, internationally acknowledged by all car makers, defining the general system-specific requirements for companies that design and/or produce a product intended for the automotive industry.
The ISO/TS 16949 standard is applicable to companies that produce cars, trucks (light, medium and heavy), buses and motorbikes – excluding industrial and agricultural vehicles, earth moving machines and everything that is defined as ‘off highway’– as well as facilities manufacturing production and/or replacement parts required by the customer.
To implement a single Quality Management System, standard ISO TS 16949 promotes the use of operative instruments for design and development, production, installation and support of products related to the automotive sector, control and monitoring of production processes with specific instruments (APQP, FMEA, Statistic Process Control, Analysis of Measuring Instruments, Product approval process) and via interaction with the client’s specific requirements.

ISO/TS 16949 Certification is required by the main US and European manufacturers of motor vehicles from their suppliers of products intended to be installed on vehicles and makes it possible to have a single reference internationally, to do away with multiple certifications and to reduce second party audits by OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers).
For OEMs, the ISO/TS 16949 certification is an important selection requirement, so much so that they are able to verify update status through restricted access to a worldwide data base, in which ISO/TS 16949 certified automotive companies are inserted.
In Italy, the Accreditation Body is ANFIA (National Association of Automotive Industry Ancillary Companies) as Oversight Office of IATF for activities falling within the ISO/TS 16949 scheme.

The new IATF 16949:2016 standard replaces ISO/TS 16949, which will remain in force until 14/9/2018, including requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and increasing automotive requirements, including:

  • requirements for safety of components and processes;
  • increased traceability requirements to adhere to the latest regulatory amendments;
  • requirements for products that include software;
  • management of the management process of returns from the field including routing to NTF (No Trouble Found) and use of the automotive industry guidelines;
  • clarifications in the management of sub-suppliers and requirements to develop the same;
  • insertion of Responsibility requirements of the organisations’ management (Corporate Responsibility).

ICIM offers certification services for standard ISO/TS 16949 and for IATF 16949 in its position as member of CISQ Automotive, Body Recognised by IATF.
